ARBs, or Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers, are a class of medications used primarily to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). They work by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. By preventing this hormone from binding to its receptors, ARBs help relax blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood. Some common ARBs include losartan, valsartan, and irbesartan. They are often prescribed for patients who cannot tolerate another class of blood pressure medications known as ACE inhibitors.
