Neprilysin is an enzyme that plays a role in breaking down certain peptides in the body, including those involved in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance. It is also known as neutral endopeptidase or CD10. Neprilysin is found in various tissues, including the kidneys, lungs, and brain. It is particularly important in the cardiovascular system because it helps degrade natriuretic peptides, which are molecules that help to lower blood pressure by promoting the excretion of sodium and water.
Inhibiting neprilysin can be a therapeutic strategy for conditions such as heart failure, as it allows these peptides to exert their effects longer. This is the principle behind drugs like sacubitril/valsartan, which combine neprilysin inhibition with angiotensin receptor blockade to treat heart failure.
